The month is almost over and here’s what we have been doing when we’re not absolutely charming the pants off you with rants about tweens and their stupid buying habits:
What We’re Reading
Jen: While I respect Karyn for setting a “reading goal,” this is along the same lines as making a “candy-eating” or “wine-drinking” goal for me. Like, don’t worry that I’m not going to do my most favorite thing. My entire day is built around my reading schedule. No matter what, I’m reading for an hour at bedtime, at a minimum, and I plan my wake/sleep schedule accordingly. There hasn’t been a day of my life since college where I didn’t read for pleasure. I just finished the Pulitzer Prize-winning Less by Andrew Sean Greer and I’m currently on You Can’t Stay Here Forever by Katherine Lin. (I don’t say the names of books I don’t like, so if I ever mention a title, know that I recommend it.) Also, if you read on a device and you’re not signed up on Bookbub for deals, what are you even doing? (Note: for every book I finish, I buy ten more, which is super easy when they’re $1.99/each.)
Karyn: One of my goals this year is to read three books a month (two fiction and one self-help/non-fiction) and I’m trying to tackle books that everyone has read but me. With that said, I read The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley, 10% Happier by Dan Harris, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Re: Evelyn, I’m about halfway through it and I keep picturing Judy Garland as Evelyn even though she’s way too young and doesn’t fit the character description at all! If you read it, who did you picture as Evelyn?
What We’re Watching
Jen: I am watching The Traitors on Peacock, which is a silly competition show, except it’s a love letter to anyone who came up on reality TV. Among others, there are Real Housewives, Survivor and Big Brother alums, and best of all, throwbacks from the early days of The Challenge. I’m talking Trishelle and C.T. and Johnny Bananas. Plus, Alan Cummings is a GD delight. I am also obsessed with True Detective: Night Country on Max and I’m pissed at how slowly the episodes are being released. I’m sorry, weekly? Did we lose a war or something?
Karyn: I binge-watched Fellow Travelers on Showtime (via Paramount+) and loved it. It’s about two closeted gay men who start having an affair during the “Lavender Scare” of the 1950s. It’s so good and Matt Bomer is excellent in it. It also has tons of gay sex in it and it’s, um, kind of hot? Is it weird that I think that? Is it because Matt Bomer is so sexy? Am I going to start watching gay porn now? Watch it and let me know!
What We’re Listening To
Jen: I listen to Ronnie and Ben on the Watch What Crappens podcast every day. They are Bravo recappers and I love them so much, I even listen to recaps of what I don’t watch. In my head, they are my best friends; they just don’t know it yet.
Karyn: I saw a silly IG prompt last week where you do a search for “daylist” in Spotify and it gives you a playlist with a fun title and songs based on your listening history. Mine was called “Electropop Poppy Music for This Moment,” which makes me sound way cooler than I am. In addition to some of my favorite Robyn songs (Call Your Girlfriend, Missing U, Honey), there was one called High Five by Sigrid that I’ve had on repeat all week. It’s not new; it’s like five years old, but it’s great. I’m also listening to All There Is, Anderson Cooper’s podcast on grief, and it’s outstanding!
Quote of the Month
Jen: Ever since I saw the movie Working Girl, I take notes and keep clip files of things I run across that are of interest or useful. Here’s something I recently wrote down:
