Hello, my name is Karyn and I ride a bike. This is me. This is who I am now.
My car lease ended last week and I returned it to the dealer, so now I’m carless in LA. Why would anyone want to be carless in LA? I have my reasons which I will explain.
First, I don’t plan on being carless forever. My plan is to go until September when the new electric Volvo comes out. So that’s six months with just my bike, which I think I can do.
I don’t drive a lot. I lived in Chicago and New York for most of my adult life and didn’t get a car until I moved to LA at almost 40 years old. Since then, I’ve leased four cars and have returned every one with less than 10,000 miles on them. I’m just not a driver; I mostly use it to toot around town. The only places I really go are Target, to return Amazon packages, and occasionally to dinner. And I’ve worked from home since COVID, so I don’t need one like I used to. With that said, when you add up the lease payment, insurance and gas, I was spending about $650 a month to return Amazon packages.
