There’s a quote attributed to Picasso that goes something like, “Good artists borrow. Great artists steal.”
Well, Karyn and I must be great because we are totally stealing this idea from MaryBeth Whalen’s I Will Tell You This. (Which she says she got from author Kim Hooper.)
So we’re kind of a circle of thieves.
In a nutshell, here’s what each of us are thinking/doing/being this week.
Quote of the Week
Jen: Mine comes from Michael Ian Black’s Substack, where he’s talking about reuniting with other members of The State for stage shows. It’s the perfect take on having old friends. “Home is the place where we most belong but just because it’s home doesn’t mean it’s always pleasant. That’s true for us, too. We have fights. We bicker about stupid shit. There is no situation in which we will forgo a three-hour discussion when a ten minute one will do. We are impossible and I love us when I do not want to murder us with a hammer.”
Karyn: MIB’s Substack is so good! My favorite part of that post is, “We were young once, and beautiful. All of us. You, too. Maybe you are still young and beautiful. Maybe you’re young but don’t feel beautiful. I know I didn’t when I was young. I felt unattractive and unsure and unable to articulate my own pain. Whatever your current station in life, I hope you know you were beautiful then. You are beautiful now, too, albeit in a different way. One of the joys of getting older is recognizing so much more beauty than I did as a young man. I see it everywhere, on every face.”
What We’re Reading
Jen: I just finished Agatha Arch Is Afraid of Everything by Kristin Bair. What a fun book! It was a quick read, with clever commentary about social media and disconnection.
Karyn: I’m listening to Britney Spears’ memoir and WOW do I hate Justin Timberlake. And Kevin Federline. I have so many thoughts about where things went wrong for her, which I’ll share when I’m finished. I’m also reading Housemoms and I love it! Jen is such a talented writer! I’m on chapter six.
What We’re Watching
Jen: Fletch and I are watching the second season of Loudermilk. I always thought Fletch had sort of a Ron Livingston vibe, and this show does nothing to dispel that. The whole first season, I kept saying, “This character reminds me of you,” and Fletch wasn’t having it. In the opening scene of season two, Loudermilk gets into an argument with an annoying barista. Sheepishly, Fletch turned to me and said, “Yeah, I see it now.”
